Stem cell therapies have revolutionised the world of medicine, delivering dozens of new treatments for previously incurable conditions. Stem cells have also become a crucial part of the field of regenerative medicine, which has the potential to significantly improve the average human lifespan.
In a new and exciting stem cell breakthrough, a group of UAE researchers have shown that stem cells may be useful for treating the lung damage caused by COVID-19. This breakthrough could potentially save the lives of millions of people around the globe.
One particularly interesting aspect of this new therapy is that it is administered through inhalation — a form of delivery that is rarely used in the world of stem cells.
The researchers have already successfully tested this new treatment on 73 COVID-19 patients in the UAE. All patients were cured of COVID-19 before being discharged from hospital.
One of the lead researchers, Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, shared the results of the team’s research at a recent press conference, announcing: “At the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Center, we are proud to work on developing a supportive treatment for COVID-19 patients which is undergoing clinical trials for the first time in the UAE. This is a national achievement.”
Dr. Al Kaabi made it clear that this new stem cell treatment is supportive and not curative. It helps to relieve the life-threatening symptoms of COVID-19 but does not eradicate the virus.
What Does this Stem Cell Therapy Involve?
The procedure starts with doctors extracting stem cells from a patient’s blood and “activating” them. The stem cells are then reintroduced to the patient via a nebulizer, which converts the stem cell solution into a fine mist, which is inhaled.
Once the stem cells have reached the lungs, they begin to regenerate lung cells and modulate immune system response. This reduces inflammation, making it easier for the patient to breathe, and prevents the COVID-19 from causing additional damage to healthy cells.
Who Developed This New Stem Cell Therapy?
This ground-breaking new treatment was developed by a team of doctors and researchers at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Centre (ADSCC). The centre has received a patent from the UAE Ministry of Economy.
